In summary, your fish die because of a philosophical dilemma: they are faced with the Existence of the Nothingness (the outside of aquarium) and the only way for them to deal with it is to try to negate the Nothingness by jumping into it. Of course, it is the fish's imperfect understanding of the Dialectics of the Universe which makes them think that the outside of the aquarium is Nothingness because it is not Water.
